Summary
First Solar Vietnam Manufacturing Co Ltd (FSVMCL), under the US-based First Solar Group, is undertaking the solar cell factory project in Ho Chi Minh City, Cu Chi District, Vietnam.

The project involves the construction of an 113,000m2 solar cell factory with annual capacity of 1,080MW and 5.31 million modules on 44ha of land. It includes the construction of an 107,000m2 industrial space, a large logistics area and 6,000m2 external office building.

The project is being implemented in phases.

The first phase includes the construction of four operating lines to manufacture a maximum of 250MW every year, warehouse facility and other related infrastructure while the production capacity will be increased by four-fold in the next phases.

In January 2011, FSVMCL was granted investment license for the project.

M+W Group has been appointed as contractor for the project.

On March 22, 2011, construction work on the project was initiated. However, in the second quarter of 2012, the project was placed on hold due to financial issues.

In July 2012, Cushman & Wakefield was appointed as the marketing consultant.

On April 21, 2016, Ho Chi Minh City Industrial and Export Processing Zones Management Authority (Hepza) announced they have found a potential investor who may put forward at least US$500 million to the project.The name of the new investor was not disclosed.

In July 2017, FSVMCL officially restarted the project.

Construction activities are underway and simultaneously, FSVMCL is coordinating with the authorities to carry out the environmental impact assessment reports, import and export procedures. Subject to the completion of necessary works, FSVMCL will carry out the import of equipment and machinery for factory installation to prepare for production. Construction activities are scheduled to be completed by September 2018.
