Summary
Kenya's Geothermal Development Company (GDC), a 100% state-owned corporation is undertaking the development of the geothermal power plant at Menengai Crater in Nakuru County, Kenya.

The project involves the construction of a geothermal power plant with the capacity of 460MW. It will include the construction of a powerhouse, a substation and chimneys, the installation of turbines and generators, drilling and testing of 3 exploration, 6 appraisal, and 27 production geothermal wells, laying of transmission lines and pipeline network.

The project will be implemented in two phases. First phase includes construction of 105MW power plant and remaining in the second phase.

In August 5, 2013, GDC issued a request for proposal for contractor under build, own, operate (BOO) basis.

In May 2014, GDC selected three companies Quantum Strategies Ltd, Sosian Energy Ltd and Orpower Twenty Two to construct three 35MW each on BOO basis.

On November 3, 2014, GDC signed a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Kenya Power and Lighting Co. Ltd (KPLC) to sell the energy generated by the project.

The African Development Bank along with European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Government of Kenya will be financing $503m on the project.

The project involves the construction of a geothermal power plant with the capacity of 460MW at Menengai in Nakuru, Nakuru County, Kenya.

The US$746 million project includes the following:

1. Construction of a substation, powerhouse

2. Construction of chimneys

3. Laying of transmission lines and pipeline network.

4. Drilling and testing of 3 exploration, 6 appraisal, and 27 production geothermal wells

5. Installation of turbines

6. Installation of transformers

7. Construction of other related facilities
