It also includes the construction of adolescent facility, pediatric intensive care unit, inpatient area, medical high dependency unit, dining facilities, play and recreational facilities, car parking, and related facilities and the installation of elevators, safety and security systems.

Initially, the project was delayed due to some issues. In September 2012, the project received the planning approval.

Following a detailed evaluation process, the health board on March 11, 2013 announced that three consortia have been shortlisted to move into the next phase of the tender process.

These are: Mosaic - Laing O'Rourke Construction (construction) and Keppie Design and Hassell Ltd (architects); B3 - BAM Construction and Balfour Beatty Construction (construction) and Building Design Partnership (architects); and Integrated Healthcare Solutions Lothian - Brookfield Multiplex Construction Europe (construction) and HLMAD (architects).

On March 6, 2014, Integrated Healthcare Solutions Lothian - Brookfield Multiplex Construction Europe (construction) was appointed as the EPC contractor and HLMAD architects as the design contractor.

In September 2014, NHS received planning approval from City of Edinburgh Council for the project.

In February 2015, construction works commenced.

On June 2, 2015, Tender issued for construction of external entrance canopies with submission deadline on June 23, 2015. However, contractor is yet to be appointed.

Macquarie Capital Group Ltd has been appointed as the financial advisor and the Bouygues E&S FM UK Ltd secured contract for facilities management services.

The project is facing delay and the new hospital building is scheduled to be open in the fourth quarter of 2018.

The project involves demolition and the six-story construction of hospital building in Edinburgh, the UK.
