The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is undertaking the upgrade of the Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plant in Alabama, the US.

The project involves the upgrade of Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plant to increase the power generation capacity by 155MW for each of the three reactors namely Unit 1, Unit 2 and Unit 3. It includes the installation of 344 new fuel assemblies, reactor components, instrumentation and control systems, other related machinery, safety and security systems.

TVA's in-house division is undertaking the engineering design and upgrade works on the project.

In September 2015, TVA submitted the Extended Power Uprate (EPU) request to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

In December 2015, GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy was appointed as contractor to provide outage services for the three reactors.

In August 2017, NRC issued approvals for TVA's EPU request which is to increase the generating capacity at its Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plant by 14.3%.

On February 17, 2018, TVA commenced upgrade works on Unit 3.

Upgrade works on the Unit 3 are underway. Works on Unit 1 and Unit 2 are scheduled to commence in the fourth quarter of 2018 and second quarter of 2019 respectively.

The project involves the upgrade of Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plant to increase the power generation capacity by 155MW for each of the three reactors located in Athens, Alabama, the US.

The US$475 million project includes the following:

1. Installation of 344 new fuel assemblies

2. Installation of reactor components

3. Installation of instrumentation and control systems

4. Installation of other related machinery

5. Installation of safety and security systems
