Societe Nationale d'Electricite (SNEL) is undertaking the Regional and Domestic Power Market Development project in Democratic Republic of Congo.

The project involves the rehabilitation of generation capacities at the Inga 1 and Inga 2 power plants and the construction of a 400KV transmission line from Inga to Kinshasa and two substations and the expansion of the distribution system in Kinshasa and the rehabilitation of the transmission line from Inga to Kolwezi the border of the Republic of Zambia.

The project is being funded by the World Bank Group and African Development Bank (AfDB).

In 2010, the construction of a 400KV transmission line from Inga to Kinshasa was awarded to Kalapataru Power Transmission Limited. In the first quarter of 2011, the construction activities commenced and are expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2016. This line is being funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB).

In January 2012, Alstom Hydro and Andritz Hydro awarded the EPC contract for the rehabilitation of Inga 2 power plant.

In June 5, 2013, EPC contract for the modernization of Inga I power plant has been awarded to a consortium of Elecnor and Voith. In January 2014, construction activities commenced.

In January 2014, EPC contract for the renovation the transmission lines from Inga to Kolwezi (2,200km) awarded to Cegelec Belgique and Siemens.

Construction activities are underway.

Scope
The project involves the rehabilitation of power generation capacities in Democratic Republic of Congo.

The US$1450 million project includes the following:

1. Rehabilitation of power generation capacities at the Inga 1 and Inga 2 power plants

2. Construction of a 265km 400KV transmission line from Inga to Kinshasa

3. Rehabilitation of the power distribution network in Kinshasa

4. Rehabilitation of the 2,200km transmission line from Inga to Kolwezi, the border of the Republic of Zambia.

5. Rehabilitation of the 2,000km transmission line from Inga to Katanga
