The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) is undertaking the construction of a transmission ring project in Kenya.

The project involves the construction of substations and transmission lines across Nairobi and is divided into two phases.

Phase I comprising of the construction of a 220/66kV substation at Athi River and a 220kV substation at Isinya.

Phase II includes the construction of 220/66kV new substations at Ngong and Koma Rock and expansion works at the existing 220kV substation in Dandora. It includes the installation of transformers and transformers.

The project also involves the construction of transmission line which includes the diversion of one of the Suswa-Isinya 400kV double circuit lines into the new Ngong substation and the 220kV underground cable connecting Dandora and Koma Rock substations.

In June 2012, French government through Agence Francaise de Developpement (AFD) approved US$98 million loan.

Persons Brinckerhoff has been appointed as consultant and POWER Engineers, Inc. as technical consultant.

In November 2012, Jyoti Structures of India was appointed as construction contractor for the transmission lines and Iberdrola Ingenieria y Construccion (Iberdrola) was appointed as supervision and construction contract for substations.

In May 2014, Iberdrola appointed Avantha Group Company CG to supply the power equipment.

Siemens Transmission And Distribution Ltd was appointed to construct the Suswa substation.

On June 5, 2015, construction works on the Suswa substation were completed.

In May 2016, KETRACO issued tender for works to be carried out by the contractor at the substations. The work comprises construction and commissioning of works stopped by the previous contractor at the 220/ 66kV substation at Athi River, Kimuka & Komarock. The submission deadline is June 28, 2016.

In October 2016, the transmission line from the 400/220kV Isinya substation will be expanded as part of the interconnection with Tanzania to the border in Namanga.

General Electric has been appointed as substations supply contractor.

Tender activities are underway for Ngong sub-station and the construction works for transmission lines for underground cable connecting Dandora and Koma Rock substations are underway.

Scope

The project involves the construction of two new 220 kV substations and three new 220/66 kV substations and the installation of transmission lines in Kenya.

The US$184 million project includes the following:
1. Construction of 220/66kV substations at Athi River, Koma Rock and Ngong
2. Construction of 220kV substations at Isinya and Suswa
3. Expansion works at the existing 220kV substation in Dandora
4. Construction of a diversion in one of the Suswa - Isinya 400kV double circuit lines into the new Ngong substation
5. Construction of a 220kV underground cable connecting Dandora and Koma Rock substations
6. Construction of related facilities
7. Installation of transformers
8. Laying of transmission lines
