Summary
The Kuwait University (KU) is undertaking the Sabah Al-Salem University City project in Shadadiyah, Kuwait.

The Government of Kuwait has allocated 520ha of land in the Al Shadidiyah area for the project. This high profile project will enable the consolidation of the various colleges into one purpose-built campus.

The project includes the construction of 16 colleges comprising men's campus, women's campus, engineering and petroleum college, four medical colleges and a 617-bed teaching hospital. The portfolio also includes a hotel, housing complex, sports facilities, art and science facility, auditoriums and Air-conditioned walkways.

In September 2004, WZMH Architects, Moriyama + Teshima and du Toit Allsopp Hillier were appointed as the master planners.

Drake and Scull Kuwait (DSK), a subsidiary of Drake & Scull International (DSI) PJSC, was appointed for MEP package for the first college in the fourth quarter of 2011. In October 2012, DSK further appointed as MEP contractor for a private residential development and the second college for Sabah Al-Salem University at the contract value of US$30 million.

It includes the construction of College of Engineering and Petroleum, College of Science, Hospital, Hotel, Student Athletics College, College of Law, College of Arts.

College of Engineering and Petroleum:

The project involves the construction of college campus on a 220,000m2 area with a capacity to accommodate approximately 5,150 students and 1,200 administrators.

Cambridge Seven Associates, Inc has been appointed as an architect; and KEO International and Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation were appointed as PMC contractors.

Khalid Ali Al Kharafi & Brothers were appointed as engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor in December 2010.

Gulf Consult was appointed as the engineering and design consultant.

Drake and Scull Kuwait (DSK) was appointed as MEP contract for the first college in the fourth quarter of 2011.

College of Arts:

The project involves the construction of a five-story academic building on 38,960m2 area. It includes the construction of faculty offices, administrative office buildings, staff room, cafeteria and parking units.

In 2010, Perkins+Will was appointed to design the project. On May 23, 2011, Combined Group Contracting Company and Arabtec Construction signed a contract for the construction and supervision.

In December 2011, Drake and Scull Kuwait was awarded Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) contract.

Dar Al- Handasah Consultants (shair & partners) was appointed as an engineering consultant, Perkins+Will International Engineering Consultants W.L.L. in association with SSH International was appointed as design consultants.

Packages 4A, 4B and 3A:

In the fourth quarter of 2010, Package 4A & 4B contract including the construction of service tunnel was awarded to First Kuwaiti General Trading & Contracting Company (FKTC).

In July 2011, Build, Operate and Manage contract for Package 3A including construction of service stations 1,2 and annexed building was awarded to Mohammed Abdulmohsin Al-Kharafi & Sons Company (MAK Group).

College of Business & Women:

The project involves the construction of an education complex on 4,900,000m2 area. It includes the construction of a 117,000m2 college for women and 124,700m2 college for business administration, laboratories, classrooms, exhibition hall, an administration office suite, faculty offices, a trading floor center, center for excellence and prayer rooms.

SSH International has been appointed as FEED contractor; Cambridge Seven Associates, Inc and in association with Gulf Consult has been appointed as design consultants.

KEO International and Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation were appointed as PMC contractors; and Buro Happold as the infrastructure consultant.

In July 2011, Al-Hani Construction and Trading Company along with Sinohydro Corporation were appointed as EPC contractors for the project.

College of Science:

The project involves the construction of college campus on a 76,230m2 area with a capacity to accommodate 6,350 students and 1330 academic staff members.

It includes the construction of three primary buildings comprising a men's campus, a women's campus, faculty club, utility building, office building, staff room, cafeteria and parking units.

KEO International and Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation were appointed as PMC contractors; and Gulf Dredging & General Contracting Co. as infrastructure contractor.

NBBJ and WZMH were appointed as architects and Gulf Consult as the design consultant, Buro Happold as infrastructure consultant and SSH International as FEED contractor respectively while Metallurgical Corporation of China, jointly with the local contractor Khalid Ali Al Kharafi & Brothers was appointed as EPC contractor on April 15, 2012.

Student Athletics College:

The project involves the construction of student activities and athletic facilities on a 205,053m2 area. It includes the construction of athletic, recreation and aquatic centers, student centers and student union campus, athletic and recreational facilities, two information centers, men's outdoor facilities, 2,000 seat tennis center, 15,000 seats track and field stadium and public transportation station.

Gulf Consult in association with Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill (SOM) has been appointed to undertake the Study, Design, and Supervision.

KEO International and Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation were appointed as PMC contractors; and Buro Happold as an infrastructure consultant.

Hospital:

The project involves the construction of a hospital building with 600 beds. It will include the construction of operating theaters, outpatient wards, an intensive care unit and a medical imaging department.

Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation and Turner Projacs JV have been appointed to provide project management services.

In May 2013, land acquisition has been completed and Kuwait University initiated the process of appointing consultants to design.

College of Law:

The project involves the construction of Law College building on a 54,000m2 area. It includes the construction of a courthouse, six departments, courtrooms, law libraries, central food courts, a seminar hall, a staff room, cafeteria and parking units.

PageSoutherlandPage in association with Dar Saleh Al Qallaf Engineering Consultants has been appointed to provide programming and design services.

Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation and Turner Projacs JV have been appointed to provide project management services.

Gulf Dredging & General Contracting Co. has undertaken the construction of infrastructure facilities.

In May 2013, design work on the project was completed.

In January 2015, Shapoorji Pallonji and Al-Sager Trading & Contracting were appointed as the construction contractor for the project whose scope of work includes the construction, operation, and maintenance.

In the first quarter of 2015, the construction works commenced.

Hotel Development:

The project involves the construction of a university hotel on 34,362m2 area. It includes the construction of suites, banquet halls, dining halls, and an office building.

The project includes the construction of a lounge bar, meeting rooms, conference rooms, a multifunction hall, parking space and other related facilities and the installation of CCTV cameras, security systems, elevators.

Shapoorji Pallonji was appointed as the Turnkey Contract or to undertake design-build, supply, installation and maintenance of medical procurement for the Al Sabah Hospital.

On May 12, 2016, China State Construction Engineering Corporation (Middle East) (L.L.C) (CSCEC ME) was awarded the contract for the construction, completion and operation and maintenance of Administration Facilities with a contract value of US$580 million.

In July 2016, Societe D' Enterprise & De Gestion SEG Qatar was appointed as the construction contractor in association with ALEMAR Engineering for Roads & Building Contracting Company for students athletics college.

Construction works are underway on the main campus like the College of Art and College of Education; College of Architecture (COA) and College of Computing Sciences and Engineering (CCSE); College of Business and College of Women; College of Engineering and Petroleum; College of Science and the Faculty Club; College of Social Science, Shari'a and Islamic Studies, and Law.

The Sabah Al-Salem University City project involves the development of a modern education campus comprising 16 colleges and support facilities on 520ha area in Shadadiyah, Kuwait.

The US$5,200 million project includes the following:
