The Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) is undertaking the construction of a desalination plant in Kuwait.

The project involves the construction of a desalination plant with a processing capacity of 270,000 tonnes of seawater into fresh water a day. It includes the construction of purification units, storage facilities, pumping stations, metering stations and the installation of equipment, and the laying of pipelines.

On May 31, 2016, MEW awarded a US$386 million construction contract to Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co Ltd (Doosan).

Doosan will be in charge of engineering, design, procurement, construction and test operation of the plant. It will also provide operation and maintenance (O&M) services until November 2023.

TML Construction Company was appointed as a subcontractor for offshore works and Protec Arisawa as supply contract for pressure vessels.

In April 2017, Doosan awarded the control systems supply contract to Yokogawa Electric Korea, a subsidiary of Yokogawa Electric Corporation.

In January 2017, offshore dredging and pipeline installation works commenced.

In October 2017, Doosan has selected Asahi Kasei's Microza hollow-fiber as pre-treatment membrane for the project. The membrane treatment capacity is scheduled to be 610,000 tons per day.

Offshore construction works are underway. Construction work is expected to be completed in November 2018.
