Summary
The Tanathi Water Services Board (TWSB) is planning to undertake the construction of Thwake multi-purpose dam in Kenya.

The project involves the construction of a dam whose water capacity span across 2,900ha of land with a storage capacity of 825m3.

The project is scheduled for phases.

The first phase includes construction of a 77m high, 1.6km long multipurpose rockfill dam with 60m tall intake tower, three penstocks for hydropower, associated preliminary works. It includes draught outlet, service spillway, and a spillway.

The second phase includes building water works and distribution of up to 3.46-million m3.

The third phase includes the construction of a 20MW hydropower substation.

The fourth phase will irrigate the environs, covering 100,000ha.

In August 2013, TWSB reissued a call for consultants to review the design and supervise construction of the project and issued a new call to supervise construction of works related to Thika dam.

In October 2013, the Government of Kenya applied for a loan from the African Development Bank.

On October 30, 2013, African Development Bank Group approved US$97 million loan to the Government of Kenya for the project.

SMEC Holdings has been awarded a contract for design and supervise construction of the dam, together with a powerhouse, substation and power transmission main.

The project will be jointly funded through national government and the African Development Bank(AfDB).

In October 2016, Government of Kenya is in process of land acquisition for the project.

In March 2017, TWSB announced China Gezhouba Construction Group Corporation(CGCGC) is the lowest bidder and Sino Hydro Tianjin Engineering Co Ltd (STECOL Corporation) is the second lowest bidder for the project. However, State Department of Irrigation awarded the contract to the STECOL Corporation.

On March 30, 2017, CGCGC filed a petition to Public Procurement Administrative Review Board (PPARB) against the awarded contract. However, final decision yet to be announced.

The project is facing delay due to an appeal filed by CGCGC.
