The Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) is undertaking the conversion of the Subiya Power Plant in Kuwait.

The project involves the conversion of the existing open-cycle gas turbine units at Subiya power station to combined-cycle facility with a capacity expansion by 250MW.

It includes the construction of a coal washing unit, water transmission pipelines, raw water storage tanks, switch-yard for power evacuation and substation, the installation of turbines, heat recovery steam generators and condensing steam turbine generator sets, and the laying of transmission lines.

In June 2015, MEW issued tenders for the appointment of construction contractor with a submission deadline on August 2, 2015.

In July 2015, MEW extended the bid submission date to September 6, 2015.

In November 2015, MEW again extended the bid submission date to December 13, 2015.

On December 20, 2015, MEW received bids from the following seven groups of companies:

Alghanim International General Trading & Contracting has been appointed as construction contractor.

Construction activities are underway and scheduled to be completed by the first quarter of 2019.

Scope

The US$300 million project includes the following:
