Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) is planning to build a geothermal power plant in Olkaria, Great Rift Valley, Kenya.

In March 2016, KenGen published a pre-qualification notice for the EPC contract for the project with submission deadline is April 22, 2016.

The project is being financed by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), The European Investment Bank (EIB) and KfW Bankengruppe (KfW).

In July 2016, the EIB's Board of Directors approved the financing.

In August 2016, KenGen secured US$79 million loan from The European Investment Bank (EIB).

Tender activities are underway and construction is expected to commence in the fourth quarter of 2017.

The plant is expected to be operational in January 2019.
