The Ministry of Regional Development Authority (MRDA) along with Tana and Athi Rivers Development Authority is planning to undertake the High Grand Falls Multipurpose Water Complex project on the Tana River, Kenya.

The project involves the construction of a concrete gravity dam on 16,500ha of land. The project will include the construction of a dam of length of 2,300m and height 130m, spillway, shafts, access roads and other facilities, and the installation of gates and dam controlling system.

In February 2011, MRDA completed the feasibility studies on the project.

Egis Bceom International has been appointed as an engineering consultant and Kenface Enconsult Ltd for environmental impact assessment study (EIA).

On July 11, 2012, China State Construction Engineering Corporation Ltd has been appointed as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for the project.

In October 2013, project placed on hold due to corruption allegations and in third quarter of 2015, the project was revived.

The project is funded through a public private partnership (PPP) from China firms and the Export-Import Bank of China.

In September 2015, feasibility study, detailed designs have been completed and in March 2016, EIA completed.

Site preparatory works are underway.
