Germany’s construction industry has not seen the best start to 2010 with heavy snowfall delaying much construction. BMI nonetheless forecasts better performance for the sector in the rest of 2010 with year on year (y-o-y) growth of 4.41%. This will take the value of the sector to US$142.4bn for 2010 a figure which is set to grow to US$147.9bn by 2014. Growth is expected to be slow but steady over the period with government capital investment falling slightly to 48.87% by 2014.
Major projects were minimal this quarter as much construction work was delayed in January 2010. Hochtief’s plans to launch an IPO and Vattenfalls divestment schedule were both put on hold with companies citing poor market conditions. Vattenfall has now re-opened bidding for its German highvoltage transmission system, with Belgium's grid operator Elia a front-runner. The company expects to finalise the sale later in 2010.
UK-based construction company Balfour Beatty, along with its subsidiary, Schreck-Mieves, won two multi-disciplinary contracts worth GBP39mn (US$64.96mn) in Germany. The projects require catenary and 50Hz installations for the Coswig-Dresden Neustadt and the Leipzig-Leutzsch-Plagwitz lines. While Germany’s business environment fundamentals remained strong this quarter, external risks and inputs due to the scale of power inputs dragged the score down slightly. Overall Germany scored 71.1 placing it in third place amongst developed states behind Australia and the UK. Its BMI Project Finance rating was on a par with other developed European states; however, was let down by the commission and operating phase giving an overall score of 67.6, putting the country in fourth place in the region. Germany’s macroeconomic outlook is good: it is one of the strongest and most developed infrastructure markets in Europe. The country’s energy sector currently lags somewhat behind transport development and the relatively high euro also offers some downside risk in terms of importing materials. However, overall the state has a highly stable environment and is expected to see steady growth over the forecast period.
